Overview
As a Senior Software Engineer on the Elasticsearch - Search Relevance team, you will shape the future of search quality and relevance at scale. You’ll lead feature development, optimize algorithms, and contribute to the Lucene-based search stack within a globally distributed team. You’ll work on vector search capabilities, performance, and collaboration with the open-source community. This role offers the chance to impact customers’ real-time search experiences and advance AI-powered search at Elastic.

- Lead initiatives to deliver industry-leading search with peak speed and relevance
- Develop new search features, fix bugs, and simplify code; invent or adapt algorithms and data structures as needed
- Collaborate with a globally distributed team focusing on vector search capabilities
- Become an expert on Elasticsearch search relevance and drive improvements
- Engage with community members on issues and PRs, triaging or contributing directly
- Write idiomatic Java (Elasticsearch is 99.8% Java)
- Professional experience with search or vector databases at scale
- Strong core Java skills, knowledge of data structures, concurrency, and lambdas
- Ability to own projects end-to-end including technical design and implementation
- Experience collaborating asynchronously across teams and open-source contexts
- Worked with data storage technologies like Elasticsearch, Solr, PostgreSQL, MongoDB, or Cassandra
- Collaborative development and code review
- Autonomy in driving projects
- Clear, asynchronous communication across distributed teams
- Java (core)
- Vector search and algorithms such as HNSW, IVF
- Experience with Elasticsearch, Solr, PostgreSQL, MongoDB, Cassandra
